After running your search on the Lexis+® service you can narrow your results using filters in the Filters section on the results list. You can narrow using some or all available filter choices in a Category. Under the Filters heading, click the name of the filter to expand or collapse available areas. The default view for filters displays a maximum of 5 options. Click More for additional options when available.

Any filters applied to your results, including any filters applied prior to running your search, appear above your results list. You can clear filters as needed, including any filters applied prior to running your search.

Filters apply only to the Category you are currently viewing. For example, if you apply the Timeline filter while viewing Cases, that filter does not apply when you switch to News.

The service does not include all filters for all categories. For example, Category is an available filter in Secondary Materials because there are multiple types of documents in Secondary Materials, but Category is not available in Cases because only cases appear and there is no need to filter results to other types of documents. Also, some filters only display if all the results in your current results list meet that particular criteria. For example, the Timeline is only available in Legislative after you filter to Public Laws or Bills because Codes, Court Rules, and Constitutions do not have dates, but Public Laws and Bills have dates.

The following information provides additional details about using filters to narrow your results.

Applying Filters

You can search for additional terms only within your current results list by using Search Within Results under Filters in all Categories. See Search Within Results below for more information.

For other filters, except Timeline, you see all possible values in each filter list. For example, when viewing a Court or Location filter, you see all values (Ohio, 2nd Circuit, Europe, etc.) currently represented in your results set. Use the check boxes to filter your results. Click More to see additional choices for that filter, if available.

The Timeline filter is different. Use one of the following 3 ways to restrict results to a particular date range:

  • Use your mouse in the Timeline section to move either of the sliders to the left or right until the service displays the date range you want and click OK.
  • Enter the dates in the year boxes and click OK.
Note: You must use the format mm/dd/yyyy when you enter dates.
  • Click the Calendar and select the date you want for From and To and click OK.

For additional information about the available filter selections, see Available Filters below.

Clearing Filters

After you apply filters under Filters, you can easily remove them. The service displays the filters you selected at the top of your results list.

Use one of the following options to remove the filters:

  • Click the X to clear single filters.
Note: This clears all selections listed in the filter. For example, if the applied filter displays Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, when you click the X, the service clears all of them.
  • Click Clear to clear all the filters you previously selected.

Search Within Results

Use the Search Within Results filter to narrow your results with the ease of natural language or the precision of terms and connectors. The field includes some features to help you construct your search:

  • Select Include to use Search Within Results to use terms to narrow your results. For example, if your initial search was fraud on the market, you can use Search Within Results to narrow your results to only documents discussing market price by using market price in the search field.
  • Select Exclude to use Search Within Results to remove results with a specific term or that meet your search criteria. For example, if your initial search was fraud on the market, you can use Search Within Results to remove documents discussing insider trading schemes by using insider trading w/10 scheme in the search field to remove documents where insider trading appears within 10 words of scheme.
  • Use the Full Document (all segments) drop-down list to select a segment to use with your search to narrow your results. For example, if your initial search was fraud on the market, you can use Search Within Results to narrow your results in Cases using the Headnotes segment to identify the results with fraud on the market in the case's headnotes:
    • If you selected Include, only documents with fraud on the market in the headnotes appear in the results.
    • If you selected Exclude, documents with fraud on the market in the headnotes are removed from the results.

Note:  You can only use one segment in each Search Within Results search. If you want to use multiple segments, such as Headline and Byline in Legal News, you have to do separate Search Within Results searches.

Saving Filter Selections as a Favorite Filter

You can save your applied filter selections as a favorite filter. After you apply the filter, the service runs the search and uses the favorite filter like a pre-search filter.

Take the following steps to save filter selections as a favorite:

  1. Select the filters you want to use.
  2. Click the Star in the applied filters area above your results list.
  3. Select Include "Narrow by" selections for to choose the current category only or all selections you made for all categories in the current search.
  4. Click Save in the Save as Favorite Filter box.

Take the following steps to use a favorite filter:

  1. Locate the filter in the favorites drop-down list on the home page.
  2. Click the filter you want to apply to the search.
Note: After you select a filter, the service displays the filters on the right side of the search box. You can Clear or remove filters by clicking the drop-down arrow and either clicking the X next to the filter you want to remove or remove all filters by clicking Clear.
  3. Enter your search terms.
  4. Click Search.

Note: If your favorite filter includes a Search Within Results search that includes a citation, the search retrieves documents that refer to that citation but does not retrieve the full text citation.

Jurisdiction and Court Filters

While viewing results in the Cases, Briefs, Pleadings and Motions, and Jury Verdicts & Settlements Categories, any selection you made before your search with the Jurisdiction filter is reflected in the results under the Court filter. Even though you do not see a Jurisdiction filter under Filters, your selection is still retained and appears under the Court filter.

For example, if you select Ohio and Include related Federal content under Jurisdiction before running your search, while you are viewing your results under Cases, the Court filter is available under Filters with the choices of Federal: 6th Circuit, Supreme Court and State: Ohio.

Jurisdiction and Location Filters

You can use the Jurisdiction pre-search filter or the Location post-search filter to limit results to publications or materials originating from a particular state.

While viewing results in the News and Scientific Categories, any selection you made with the Jurisdiction pre-search filter is reflected in the results under the Location by Publication filter. For example, if you select Ohio, as your Jurisdiction pre-search filter, Ohio appears under the Location by Publication post search filter.

While viewing results in the Company and Financial and Directories Categories, any selection you made with the Jurisdiction pre-search filter is reflected in the results under the Location filter. For example, if you select Ohio, as your Jurisdiction pre-search filter, Ohio appears under the Location post search filter.

Note:  A publication's Location is determined by an algorithm using the publication's name and guide description to assign its location.

The following guidelines apply to the JurisdictionLocation by Publication, and Location filters for News, Company and Financial, Scientific, and Directories materials:

  • If you select Non-Jurisdictional - results include international publications
  • If you select U.S. Federal - results include primarily U.S. publications where the publication's original state cannot be determined
  • If you select International - results include international publications
  • If you select a State or Territory - results include publications originating from that state or territory

Note:  Some Company, Scientific and Directories publications are jurisdictional, but some are not. Applying a Jurisdiction filter before your search may exclude helpful publications. Use the Jurisdiction filter only when you know the exact jurisdiction for the publication.

Available Filters

Each content Category has various filters related to the specific content type in the Category. Even though some of the filters may be the same, such as Court in Cases and Briefs, Pleadings and Motions, any selections you make under Filters in a Category does not apply to another Category. For example, if you select 6th Circuit as the Court in cases, when you switch to view Briefs, Pleadings and Motions, the 6th Circuit filter is not automatically applied.
