Article Content

The information in this article applies to the following LexisNexis® products and services: Lexis+®, Lexis®

The documents available online are comprised of different parts referred to as segments. You can use segment searching to run your search in specific areas of the documents to give you more precise results for your research. You can use segments to construct a search in the Search box and also in Search Within Results while reviewing your results. Segment searching works in Natural Language and Terms and Connectors searches.

To use a segment in your search, enter the name of the segment and put your search in parentheses next to the segment name. For example, to find all statutes with consumer protection in the HEADING, run the following search: heading("consumer protection")

The following list includes additional information about constructing your search using segments:

  • You can use wildcards and universal characters in the segments. For more information, see How Do I Search for Variations of Words? .
  • Stemming works in segments, and the service automatically searches for other forms of some words. For example, hlead(amend) finds the terms amend, amended, amending, and other forms of amend. For more information, see How Do I Search for Variations of Words? .
  • If your search includes a segment not available in a particular Category, you receive no results for that content type. For example, the search company(lexisnexis) retrieves no results in Statutes and Legislation.
  • Some segments have specific guidelines or additional information available about how they work. For more information about these segments, see Additional information about specific segments below.

When you search with segments, the Navigate all terms feature only highlights and displays terms as they appear within the segment searched. When you search only with segments, you may see very little or no information on the Results list, depending on the segment you used in the search. For example, if your search only runs in the NAME segment, the service does not have an entire paragraph or many hits to display on the Results list. On the other hand, a search in the HEADING segment may display more information depending on the document type and the information contained in the heading.

At this time, printing specific segments from the document is not available.

All Available Segments

The available segments on the Lexis service depend on the Category you are using for your research. For example, segments available in Cases may not be available in News because the different types of documents in the categories do not have the same parts. Segment searching is available in all Categories.

If your search includes a segment not available in a particular Category, you receive no results for that content type. For example, the search company(lexisnexis) retrieves no results in Statutes and Legislation.

Note: Many Advanced Search forms include a Segment Examples graphic on the right side of the page. Click the graphic to see a sample document with the different segments displayed. This will help you understand which segments to use in your search. For additional information, see Using Advanced Search Forms .

Additional Information About Specific Segments

The following list includes additional information about using specific segments in your search:

  • You can use TITLE as an equivalent to the NAME segment in Cases.
  • The SUMMARY segment in Cases searches in court provided and LexisNexis created summaries. Only a few courts actually provide summaries, including the U.S. Supreme Court, some Washington state courts, and California courts.
  • In the COURT segment, term equivalents are not recognized so you must spell out the name of a specific court. For example, the search court(2nd circuit) does not retrieve cases where the name of the court is spelled out as Second Circuit. To ensure you retrieve all variations, include those variations in your search, such as court(2nd circuit or second circuit).
