Get a Document

Use the Get a Document forms to find legal documents when you know any of the following information:


Citation

Use the Get a Document form to retrieve a document when you know its citation.

For example, take the following steps to retrieve Washington v. Glucksberg, 138 L.Ed.2d 772:

  1. Click the Get a Document tab.
  2. Click By Citation to display the Get by Citation search form.
  3. Enter your citation in the text box. For this example, enter 138 L.Ed.2d 772.
    NOTE: Click Citation Formats to locate citation formats.
  4. Click Get.

Take the following steps to retrieve 42 U.S.C.S. @ 14401:

  1. Click the Get a Document tab.
  2. Click By Citation to display the Get by Citation search form.
  3. Enter your citation in the text box. For this example, enter 42 U.S.C.S. @ 14401.
    NOTE: Click Citation Formats to locate citation formats.
  4. Click Get.

Party Names

Use the Get a Document form to retrieve a document when you know the parties' names.

For example, take the following steps to find the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Miranda v. Arizona:

  1. Click the Get a Document tab.
  2. Click By Party Name to display the Get by Party Name search form.
  3. Enter the names of the parties in the Party text boxes. For this example, enter miranda in the first Party box and arizona in the second Party box.
  4. Click the radio button next to the Jurisdiction you want to search. For this example, select US Supreme Court.
    NOTE: Some jurisdictions have a drop-down list. Click the down-arrow next to these jurisdictions to display the list, then click the name of the jurisdiction that you want to search.
  5. Select a date restriction (optional).
  6. Click Search.

Docket Number

Use the Get a Document form to retrieve a document when you know the docket number.

For example, take the following steps to retrieve a case with docket number 96-1572:

  1. Click the Get a Document tab.
  2. Click By Docket Number to display the Get by Docket Number search form.
  3. Enter the docket number in the Docket Number field. For this example, enter 96 and 1572.
  4. Click the radio button next to the Jurisdiction you want to search. For this example, select US Supreme Court.
    NOTE: Some jurisdictions have drop-down lists. Click the down-arrow next to these jurisdictions to display the list, then click on the name of the jurisdiction that you want to search.
  5. Select a date restriction (optional).
  6. Click Search.
