Get a Document
Use the Get a Document forms to find legal documents when you know any of the following information:
Citation
Use the Get a Document form to retrieve a document when you know its citation.
For example, take the following steps to retrieve Washington v. Glucksberg, 138 L.Ed.2d 772:
- Click the Get a Document tab.
- Click By Citation to display the Get by Citation search form.
- Enter your citation in the text box. For this example, enter 138 L.Ed.2d 772.
NOTE: Click Citation Formats to locate citation formats. - Click Get.
Take the following steps to retrieve 42 U.S.C.S. @ 14401:
- Click the Get a Document tab.
- Click By Citation to display the Get by Citation search form.
- Enter your citation in the text box. For this example, enter 42 U.S.C.S. @ 14401.
NOTE: Click Citation Formats to locate citation formats. - Click Get.

Party Names
Use the Get a Document form to retrieve a document when you know the parties' names.
For example, take the following steps to find the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Miranda v. Arizona:
- Click the Get a Document tab.
- Click By Party Name to display the Get by Party Name search form.
- Enter the names of the parties in the Party text boxes. For this example, enter miranda in the first Party box and arizona in the second Party box.
- Click the radio button next to the Jurisdiction you want to search. For this example, select US Supreme Court.
NOTE: Some jurisdictions have a drop-down list. Click the down-arrow next to these jurisdictions to display the list, then click the name of the jurisdiction that you want to search. - Select a date restriction (optional).
- Click Search.

Docket Number
Use the Get a Document form to retrieve a document when you know the docket number.
For example, take the following steps to retrieve a case with docket number 96-1572:
- Click the Get a Document tab.
- Click By Docket Number to display the Get by Docket Number search form.
- Enter the docket number in the Docket Number field. For this example, enter 96 and 1572.
- Click the radio button next to the Jurisdiction you want to search. For this example, select US Supreme Court.
NOTE: Some jurisdictions have drop-down lists. Click the down-arrow next to these jurisdictions to display the list, then click on the name of the jurisdiction that you want to search. - Select a date restriction (optional).
- Click Search.
