Finding Citation Formats with the Citation Format Assistant

You can locate a citation format in the following ways:

Option 1: Find A Citation Format

You can search for citation formats using the Citation Format Assistant. The Citation Format Assistant uses a "word wheel" that allows you to retrieve citation formats by entering a partial citation or publication name.

NOTE: The Option 1: Find A Citation Format searches all the formats, not just formats under a specific letter.

Take the following steps to retrieve 14 Emory International Law Review 355 using the Citation Format Assistant:

  1. Click the Get a Document tab.
  2. Click Citation to display the Get by Citation search form.
  3. Click Citation Formats to display the Citation Format Assistant.
  4. Enter emory in the Option 1: Find a Citation Format field.
  5. Click Find.
  6. Click Emory Int'l L. Rev. to display the Emory International Law Review search form.
  7. Enter 14 in the first Emory Int'l L. Rev. field and enter 355 in the second field.
    NOTE: Review the Coverage information to make sure that your citation is within our source coverage.
  8. Click Get.

Take the following steps to retrieve Annotated Revised Code of Washington section 4.56.110 using the Citation Format Assistant:

  1. Click the Get a Document tab.
  2. Click Citation to display the Get by Citation search form.
  3. Click Citation Formats to display the Citation Format Assistant.
  4. Enter Washington in the Option 1: Find a Citation Format field.
  5. Click Find.
  6. Click Wash. Rev. Code to display the Washington Statutes: Annotated Revised Code of Washington (WA) search form.
  7. Enter 4.56.110 in the Wash. Rev. Code field.
  8. Click Get.

Option 2: Explore Publications Alphabetically

Citation formats are arranged in alphabetical order.

Take the following steps to retrieve 4-19 Environmental Law Practice Guide section 19.03:

  1. Click the Get a Document tab.
  2. Click Citation to display the Get by Citation search form.
  3. Click Citation Formats to display the Citation Format Assistant.
  4. Click E under Option 2: Explore Publications Alphabetically.
  5. Select and click the correct range. In this example, click Encyclopedia of Matrimonial Clauses ==> Environmental Lawyer, The.
  6. Click Environmental Law Practice Guide to display the Environmental Law Practice Guide (MB) search form.
  7. Enter 4-19 in the first Environmental Law Practice Guide field and enter @ 19.03 in the second field.
  8. Click Get.

Take the following steps to retrieve 12 Oklahoma Statutes section 683:

  1. Click the Get a Document tab.
  2. Click Citation to display the Get by Citation search form.
  3. Click Citation Formats to display the Citation Format Assistant.
  4. Click O.
  5. Select and click the correct range. In this example, click Oklahoma House Resolution [OK] ==> Ottawa Law Review [CAN].
  6. Click Okla. Stat to display the Oklahoma Statutes [OK] search form.
  7. Enter 12 in the first Okla. Stat. field and enter 683 in the second field.
  8. Click Get.
