How Can I Tell if My Computer is Running a 32-bit or a 64-bit Version of Windows?

Windows XP

Take the following steps to determine if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows XP:

  1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
    NOTE: If you use the Classic Start menu, click Start and select Settings, and Control Panel to open the Control Panel window.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the General tab.
    NOTE: Under System, the operating system displays as follows:
    • For a 32-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version [Year]
    • For a 64-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version [Year]

Windows Vista

Take the following steps to determine if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows Vista:

  1. Click Add Icon.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click System and Maintenance.
  4. Click System.
    NOTE: Your system type displays under System.

Windows 7

Take the following steps to determine if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7:

  1. Click Add Icon.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click System and Security.
  4. Click System.
