You can limit your search on TotalPatent One® by publication date when creating your search using the Search Objects.

Select Publication Date in the Date object drop-down list when you want to search for the date the patent or application was published. Enter one of the following examples in the object field:

  • Single Date - PD:[2015-08-08]
Note: Do not use brackets when searching with a single date.
  • Dates before - PD:[* to 2015-08-08] or PD:[<2015-08-08]
  • Dates after - PD:[2015-08-08 to *] or PD:[>2015-08-08 ]
  • Dates between - PD:[2015-08-08 to 2015-08-09]
The YYY-MM-DD format and square brackets are mandatory for date searches. You can use the =, <, and > symbols for date searches. You do not have to include brackets when using the symbols.

Note: For some authorities, such as US, the Publication Date is the same as the Granted Date of Issue Date. In other authorities, such as FR and BE, the Publication Date is different from the Granted Date or Issue Date. The Publication Date is the date that appears on the document on TotalPatent One. The official PDF from the authorities such as FR and BE with different Publication and Granted/Issue Dates may include the different dates.
You can also search by Application Date and Priority Date using the same options listed above.

Multiple Priority Dates

Documents may have multiple priority dates caused by provisional applications. When searching by priority date, the results list may display a priority date that is outside the scope of the search because the results list displays only the earliest priority date.  However, when you view the original PDF, you find that the priority date you were searching for is part of the array of priority information in the document.

For example, see US20050186205A1. The Bibliographic Data, at the top of the full-text patent, displays the latest priority date which is 10/04/2004 for this patent. But the Related U.S. Application Data section of the patent displays continuation data that takes the priority back to 11/13/1992. Displaying the Priority Date column in the results list gives you a quick view of the earliest priority date. To display the priority date column, select Priority Date in the Preferred result fields section of Preferences.
