How to Exclude Articles in Newsdesk 


Noise filters help remove unwanted articles from your results. This article-level categorization helps you avoid information overload and focus on only the content that really matters to you. Noise filters combine several different filters, such as Topic, Source Rank, Source Section and Source Category, into one easy to use filter that save you the time of having to construct your own complex exclusion search strings.
 

Remove the Noise Filter Categories


The following is a list of the filter categories available via the Remove the Noise functionality: 
  • Low Influence: Low reach and low editorial rank
  • Business Reports: Financial information about companies, trade, and commerce
  • Obituaries: Biographies and notices of death
  • Sports: Sports, exercise, and leisure
  • Financial Market Updates: Market performance of stocks, bonds, and commodities
  • Tenders: Invitations to bid for and awarding of large projects
  • Celebrities: Celebrities & showbiz gossip
  • Press Releases: Public statements for the press and syndicated newswire output

Exclude Articles using Noise Filters 


Take the following steps to apply Noise Filters to exclude articles:
  1. Run a search
  2. From your search results, click the arrow next to Noise Filters.
  3. Double click the remove the noise category to exclude. The category displays in pink which indicates it is set to exclude.
    Note: The number to the right of the filter indicates the number of articles currently in the search results falling under this category.  
    Note: If a category displays in blue, it indicates that the filter is set to include. For example, if Press Releases Noise Filters category displays in blue, this means articles falling under the Press Releases category will display in the search results.
  4. Click Refine.

Exclude Articles Using Search Terms 

 

The following are common searches to exclude articles, such as job postings and paywall articles. 


To exclude job postings from appearing in results, add the following NOT statement to the end of your search:

Search: NOT ("apply today" OR "Submit your resume" OR "submit your CV" OR "click to apply" OR "apply for this job" OR " Job Filter Field Role ")
Example:
title:(job AND growth) NOT ("apply today" OR "Submit your resume" OR "submit your CV" OR "click to apply" OR "apply for this job" OR " Job Filter Field Role ")  
 
 

To exclude articles that take you to a paywall, add the following NOT statement to the end of your search:

Search:

NOT accessStatus:(prem OR sub OR reg)
Example: title:(economy OR economic* AND forecast*) NOT accessStatus:(prem OR sub OR reg)
Note: You can also use the following Extras options under More filters: “Exclude articles that require a paid subscription” and “Exclude articles that require free registration”:
  1. Prior to running your search, click the More Filters link beneath the Search icon.
  2. Click on the Extras subtab.
  3. Check the box next to Exclude articles that require free registration and/or Exclude articles that require a paid subscription.
