Simple Text Searches

You can enter a single search term or use multiple search terms with search operators. Phrases should be added in quotation marks.
Note: A free text search searches only the Full Text fields. For example, if you search for Bridgestone, TotalPatent One retrieves documents where Bridgestone appears in the Title, Abstract, Description, or Claims fields.

You can also use Field searching to restrict your searches to only specific fields of the documents. For more information, see Field Searches below.

The TotalPatent One services also includes the following enhancements for more complete search results:

Operators, Connectors, and Commands Use different operators, connectors, and commands as a part of your object search to retrieve the most relevant on-point results.

When using multiple search operators, nest your search terms in parenthesis. For example, nest a string of ORs in parentheses particularly when you use the NEARn operator.

For more information, see Search Operators, Connectors, and Commands on TotalPatent One .
Wildcards and Variations of Words Use wildcards to find variations of terms based on the root word entered. For example, cha*t finds chart, chant, and chairlift. For more information, see Using Wildcards on TotalPatent One .
Stemming The stemming feature looks for different tenses of verbs and derivationally related words with similar meanings, such as democracy, democratic, democratization. TotalPatent One supports stemming for English, French and German words.

You can turn stemming off with the Stemming toggle on the search page. While stemming is on, you can disable the feature for individual terms by using quotation marks around the term.

Note: Stemming does not work when using the NEARn connector. Use wildcards with terms when you use NEARn in your search.
Automatic Plurals The TotalPatent One search engine looks for the plural form of the search term when you use the singular in your search or looks for the singular form of the term when you use the plural in your search.

You can disable this feature by using quotation marks around the term to only search for that form of the word. For example, "chemicals" does not find chemical.
Automatic Possessives The TotalPatent One search engine looks for the possessive form of search terms. For example, formula also finds formula's.

The following examples illustrate common methods of creating simple text searches:

Run the following search to find patents discussing the jet injector delivery of medication:

"jet injector" AND (medic* OR drug OR pharm*)

Run the following search to find patents that discuss wind within 15 words of alternative energy, turbine, or mill:

wind NEAR15 ("alternative energy" OR turbine OR mill)
Note: Include parenthesis around alternative terms when following the NEARn connector. Phrases should be in quotation marks or use a NEARn connector: wind NEAR15 ((alternative NEAR1 energy) OR turbine OR mill)

Note: There are certain characters and terms that cannot be searched on TotalPatent One without special action. For more information, see Reserved Characters and Keywords on TotalPatent One .

Field Searches

A field search is essentially a segment search. It allows you to create a more precise search by searching for terms only in one part of the document. Each field has an alias to make searching easier. To conduct a field search, use the following format:

FIELD:(search terms)

Note: The colon and parenthesis are mandatory except when searching by date. When searching by date, the colon is mandatory and you must use square brackets ([ ]) instead of parenthesis.

For a full list of search aliases and field types, click Search Companion above the search box and view Appendix I: List of All Search Fields in the TotalPatent One User Manual.

Field Alias Description Type
Number PID The publication ID Number
PN Standardized publication ID Number
AN Standardized application ID Number
PRN Standardized priority number
Note: A priority query searches for all documents with the same priority number, as the original 1st filed document has no priority number, just an application number, it will not be included in the results. When you want to include the 1st filed document, you add the application number to your query. For example, PRN: xxxxxx OR AN:xxxxxx

Title TI Searches all titles independent of the language Text
Kind Code PK Kind is a code relating to the class of patents, sometimes also referred to as a publication kind.
