United States District Civil Courts have the option to search by Cause. The Cause appears in the Header of the docket on the Lexis® CourtLink® service.

Cause Field 


The Cause field under Federal Court Options searches for a specific cause listed for the case. The Cause can include terms or statutes.


Take the following steps to find dockets where racketeering or RICO is listed as the cause:
  1. Select the court to search in the Within drop-down list.
  2. Click Federal Court Options to expand the section.
  3. Enter the following terms in the Cause field: racketeering or RICO
  4. Press Enter or click Search.

Take the following steps to find dockets where prisoners rights or 42 USC §1983 is listed as the cause:
  1. Select the court to search in the Within drop-down list.
  2. Click Federal Court Options to expand the section.
  3. Enter the following terms in the Cause field: 1983 or (prisoner w/3 rights)
  4. Press Enter or click Search.

Note: There is not a standard formula for how statutes are listed in the cause. It is recommended to start your search with just the section number without the title number.

  2. Enter the following terms in the search box: cause(copyright)
  3. Press Enter or click Search.
