The information in this article applies to the Lexis® Search Advantage product. The following information applies to all connectors on the service:
Note: An ! or * wildcard replaces 0 or more characters. A ? wildcard replaces exactly 1 character.
| Connectors & Wildcards | Syntax | Results | Notes |
| AND | breach AND trade secret | Located documents with the term breach AND phrase trade secret. | Use AND when it does not matter where your search terms/phrases appear in a document. When 2 terms are entered together with no Boolean syntax or operators it is treated as a phrase (i.e. trade secret). |
| OR | lawyer OR counsel | Locates documents with either lawyer or counsel or both. | Use the OR connector to find documents that contain either or both terms/phrases. |
| W/n or /n (Within Number) | airport W/5 noise | Locates documents with airport within 5 words of noise. | Use the W/n connector to find documents with search terms that appear within n words of each other. |
| NOT W/n (NOT Within Number) | rico NOT W/2 puerto | Locates documents in which rico appears at least once in the document and no occurrences of rico appear within 2 searchable words of puerto. | The second term does not need to appear in the document at all. If it does, occurrences must not appear within n words of the first word. |
| PRE/n (Preceded by n words) | pay PRE/3 television | Locates documents in which pay precedes television by 3 or fewer words. | Use the PRE/n connector to find documents in which the first search term precedes the second by not more than the stated number of words. |
| AND NOT | trust AND NOT charitable | Locates documents where the term trust occurs but the word charitable does not. | Use the AND NOT connector to find documents in which a search term or phrase is to be excluded. |
| ! or * (wildcard) | recycl! | recycl! locates documents with recycle, recycling, and recyclable. | Finds a root word plus all the words made by adding letters to the end of it. |
| ? (wildcard) | bernst??n | bernst??n finds the ei and ie spelling of the name. | Holds 1 space for a character at any point in a term. |
